Securing Communications with Transcrypt’s MO83-4XX Scrambler

When Motorola unveiled its new line of commercial series portable and mobile radios in 2004, Transcrypt International began developing a voice security solution specifically designed for the new analog radios.

The result of those efforts is the newly released Transcrypt MO83-4XX scrambler, which provides voice security available in four levels—400 (basic), 416 (medium), 430 (high) and 460 (very high)—and secures confidential communications from enemies, terrorists and insurgents.

The MO83 module measures 1.99” x 1.62” x 0.13”.

MO83-4XX Features and Benefits

The easy-to-install scrambler—which simply plugs into a flexible circuit connection inside the radio—features over-the-air-reprogramming, allowing security codes to be changed remotely while the radio is in the field and operational. The MO83-4XX is also equipped with a disable radio function, which can make a lost or stolen radio unable to receive or transmit messages, preventing breaches in communications security.

The MO83 has a very limited impact on the battery life of the radio, and does not affect the use of a system’s sub-audible signaling options. The MO83 provides clear, natural sounding speech and excellent voice recognition while the radio is operating in the secure mode.

Radio Compatibility

The MO83-4XX features a custom form factor to fit several popular Motorola radio models, including the CP140/160/180, CM340/360, CM140/160, PR400, EP450, CM300 and PM400, addressing the different versions of the radio available around the world.

“We pride ourselves on providing voice security solutions to all original equipment manufacturers,” said Michael E. Jalbert, chairman and chief executive officer of Transcrypt parent company EFJ, Inc. “The MO83-4XX is the latest example of a Transcrypt product developed specifically for a series of radios. The ultimate end-user benefit of a custom-designed unit is an easy-to-install scrambler that provides the highest levels of security for radio communications,” Jalbert added.

The scrambler was custom designed for Motorola’s Commercial Radio series.
