When it comes to modern industrial applications, label printers are expected to deliver on three key issues: speed, teamwork and reliability.
They have to be able to keep pace with the growing speed of the applications they're part of; they have to integrate flexibly into automated workflows, and they have to be reliable enough to cope with heavy-duty operation. The 64 series printers from Avery Dennison measure up on all three scores.
The fastest printers of their kind, the Avery Dennison Series 64 printers run at speeds of up to 400 mm/s and print self-adhesive labels, plastics and carton weighing up to 240 g/sqm. They boast crisp, clear reproduction of graphics, text and bar codes with a resolution of 12 dots/mm (300 dpi). The 64-bit processor can handle 150 million instructions per second, which enables it to compose the print data much faster than a conventional device.
There's no chance of a processing log jam even with complex data – the processor is fast enough to maintain the rated output speed. The printer operating system supports multi-tasking, so the processor can be preparing the next job while the current one is being printed. This helps keep the output up to speed, particularly with variable-data printing, and minimizes the delay between jobs.
The Series 64 printers integrate smoothly into existing IT environments, so companies can custom-print their labels using variable data straight from the material management or process control system, integrating bar code or human-readable type into a sharp, stylish design. The optional USI (Universal Signal Interface) can transmit signals for initiating print, feed and scan processes; vice versa, the interface returns information about operating states. If the printer is running low on label stock, for instance, it submits a warning via the interface, which turns on a warning lamp or similar signal.
The printers are ideal for heavy-duty operation in industry. The near-edge print head operates with less pressure than conventional print heads, which extends its service life. Being self-cleaning, the print head also needs little or no maintenance.
Another great feature – one that is a real benefit for bar codes – is the dot check. Every single dot is monitored continually to ensure it is in excellent working order. Any failure is immediately reported.
The Series 64 printers are economical, budget-friendly and easy to operate. If the printers detect a 5 mm unprinted area, the special foil-save feature goes into action – the printer only uses foil where there is something to print. The semi-automatic media feed makes changing and loading stock as easy as could be, which reduces setup times. The label stock is conveyed with utmost precision, and the printer can be calibrated using no more than a single label. The ready-mounted and adjusted print head can be replaced by any user without special tools.
