Wavestore Digital Readers for London Underground

The terrorist attacks on the London Underground recently has tested the capabilities of CCTV systems that are commonplace in the underground stations but which are in limited use on the trains.

Following the attacks on July 7th Alstom Transport, the management company responsible for the supply and maintenance of trains on the Northern Line, instructed Falcon Protec to supply digital readers to analyse the digital video recordings acquired from the Falcon Protec on train digital recorders.

During 2004, Wavelet Technology (WTL) had completed a feasibility study for CCTV review workstations, and the now urgent requirement demanded the completion of the system development and delivery of a fully functional product immediately.

WTL immediately established a fast track development programme assigning, software and hardware teams to perform the multiple tasks required for this crucial work.

The data and storage system of the recorder was successfully recognised to allow the copying of several recorders onto a single large back-up hard drive. Although each contains 72 hours of CCTV recording, the entire video files were copied in just 18 minutes. The original recorders were then to be installed back onto the trains for continued service.

Further development by WTL allowed the recordings to be analysed by the Wavestore Review software that can then be used to review the back-up disk’s archive of up to 120 cameras, from several days of recordings, instantly.

The Wavestore system is recognised as one of the most fully featured review products available in the CCTV industry. With the fastest access to the recordings, users can go back into archive by simple time and date entry or by dragging the unique ‘waterfall’ recordings display for each and every camera. Snapshots can be exported into JPEG, PNG, BMP format or printed out directly onto a printer. Selected video clips from multiple cameras can be further copied onto CD-R or DVD-R for playback and review on any PC.

The repeated attacks in London on the 21st prompted the immediate deployment of WTL’s prototype review workstation and the Police were able to quickly identify a suspect from the Oval station train recordings and release images that became ubiquitous in national newspapers and on television.
