COBOLD
The compact, remote-controlled manipulator COBOLD (Compact Bomb Liquidation Device) is operated by means of the most-modern intuitive remote-control method. Human abilities of sensory perception and interaction with a distant environment are supported optimally. Stereo cameras moving synchronously with the operator's head provide the operator with a stereo vision feedback of the distant environment into a Head-Mounted Display. The manipulator arm is moved synchronously with human hand movement. Thus, the gripper can be positioned exactly. This intuitive operability makes complex motion tasks such as opening doors or grasping objects easier, and reduces the training effort for operation of the system.
COBOLD is portable and can be transported in vehicles or helicopters. Four-wheel drive, two-axis steering and the capability of diagonal/lateral movement enable missions even under cramped space conditions and in complex scenarios. The manipulator is provided with even more mobility through simultaneous and automatic control of all five axes of the manipulator arm. By means of the double-jaw gripper, the arm can hold common tools for eliminating explosive ordnance devices and manipulate them up to a height of 2.2mtr.
After the end of the demonstrator phase in early 2005, development is now being completed in conformity with customer wishes.
