The leisure paradise Tropical Islands chooses contactless LEGIC® technology
Since December 2004, beach enthusiasts have been experiencing something quite new in one giant hall.
The Tropical Islands leisure complex, 60 kilometers south of Berlin, is a true tropical paradise with rain forest, lagoons, a beach and the sea. An authentic tropical paradise has been created on 6.6 hectares. This tropical island has space for over 7,000 people round the clock and throughout the year.
The original plan was to build Zeppelin airships in this unique hall. The Tropical Islands Dome is the size of eight football pitches, 360 meters long, 107 meters high and 210 meters wide, making it the world‘s largest self-supporting building. The hall is so large that the Statue of Liberty in New York (93 m) could stand in it, with the Eiffel Tower in Paris (322 m) lying next to it. A pleasant air temperature of 25 – 28 °C and a constant water temperature of 28 °C provide that South Seas flair.
Convenient possibilities for payment simplify the visitor‘s stay and at the same time significantly shorten waiting times. At Tropical Islands, contactless LEGIC smart card technology is used for all payment transactions. Visitors are given the „Tropical Islands Pass“ as soon as they enter, and they can then use it to pay for food pay for food and beverages, souvenirs and services conveniently and without using cash. Personal items are kept securely in the changing room area inside a locker that is opened and locked with a LEGIC chip wristband instead of a key. Not until the visitor leaves are all his expenses billed, including the price of entry. Visitors do not need to worry about the security of their cash all day long, and instead can concentrate solely on enjoying themselves swimming.
Two LEGIC partners have their products in use at Tropical Islands: Automaten-Seitz and Häfele. Automaten-Seitz together with MICROS-FIDELIO is responsible for all sales solutions. Cashless payment systems have been integrated at all points of sale. This has meant equipping tropical bars, souvenir shops and catering areas with LEGIC-based readers. Over 4,000 chip wristbands and 13,000 cards with an integrated LEGIC transponder chip are in use every day.
The convenient payment solutions offered by Automaten-Seitz, Germany, combined with the vending solution of MICROS-FIDELIO eliminate worries about the security of cash. The only things that the visitor needs to carry around at all times are the chip card to pay for food and beverages consumed during the day and the wristband for securely locking away personal items in changing room lockers. The waterproof wristbands and cards are essential in a water paradise, because visitors often only wear a bathing suit. This makes the visitor‘s stay as pleasant as possible.
Dialock locking systems from Häfele Germany round off the convenience. The visitor can lock his or her valuables and clothes in a changing room locker using an wristband. The wristband functions here as a contactless key. The locking mechanism is locked in conjunction with the chip in the wristband. Highly secure encryption algorithms ensure that a lock can be opened again only from this wristband.
The intention is for visitors to Tropical Islands to enjoy their stay from start to finish. With this in mind, from the early stages the management looked for a simple and convenient payment solution for visitors. It quickly became obvious that LEGIC technology was the right choice. Contactless technology, security, absolute reliability and simple billing were at the forefront. This is now apparent in daily use. Kathrin Schaffner, responsible for PR at Tropical Islands, confirms: „Because of the 24-hour operation, it‘s of particular importance to us that payments can be processed especially easily and above all securely. If we had to provide cash for the many points of sale, the amount of effort involved in the cash handling would be many times greater. The secure LEGIC technology is particularly important to us, because with this system cash is used only at the exit. The charges made to the card are completely reliable and guarantee correct billing for the food and beverages consumed and the services used. Our guests can move around the tropical paradise without any worries and just enjoy themselves.“
