Lewis University Continues Its Tradition of Quality Aviation Education

Tomorrow¹s trendsetters in aviation will need the flexibility and competence associated with a liberal arts education, as well as the specialized expertise necessary to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world where the field of aviation will play an increasingly significant role. Lewis University graduates will be among the individuals who will shape the future of aviation throughout the 21st century and beyond.

A leader in aviation education for more than 70 years, Lewis University offers a multi-faceted aviation program encompassing aviation administration, aircraft maintenance and flight education. Founded in 1932 as an aeronautical technical school for boys, Lewis has grown into a dynamic, comprehensive university that features aviation as a hallmark program.

Lewis University has groomed thousands of students for success in the field. Students come to Lewis from across the United States and abroad to study in modern aviation facilities. Approximately 400 students currently are enrolled in Lewis Aviation programs.

The aviation faculty at Lewis place strong emphasis on preparing students for the challenges of life and the aerospace industry in general.

Along with the expertise required of each major, areas of particular emphasis are oral and written communications, critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal relationships, and professional and personal ethics.

Aviation students may earn bachelor¹s degrees in several majors, including aviation flight management, aviation administration, aviation maintenance management, aviation maintenance management with a specialization in non-destructive evaluation, and aviation maintenance management with a specialization in avionics. Students also may earn an associate¹s degree in aviation maintenance technology or aviation flight management.

A certificate program is offered in aviation maintenance technology.

Students helped to build the Lewis University Airport in the 1930s, a facility that has grown into a Chicago reliever airport. In 1989, the Joliet Regional Port Authority acquired the airport, but Lewis students still have access to the facility for educational purposes.

Students also have many opportunities for co-curricular involvement through organizations such as the nationally recognized Lewis University Flight Team, Alpha Eta Rho (the national aviation fraternity), and all Lewis student organizations. The University¹s proximity to O'Hare International and Midway airports, in addition to dozens of smaller facilities, provides students with numerous internship opportunities as well.

Aviation programs are offered in the Harold E. White Aviation Center on the Lewis main campus in Romeoville, located adjacent to the Lewis University Airport. The complex includes a flight simulation lab, aviation computer lab, meteorology lab, dispatch and weather briefing facility, flight planning area, classrooms, and faculty/instructor offices. The Lewis maintenance facility is a 40,000-square-foot hangar housing sophisticated aircraft for intensive study. Lewis also owns a Boeing 737 jet, donated by United Airlines, which provides unique educational opportunities for aviation students.

The Lewis University main campus is located on Route 53 in Romeoville, about 30 minutes southwest of Chicago. While the campus is a spacious rural setting, all buildings are easily within walking distance of one another.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis University offers bachelor¹s degrees in more than 60 majors, accelerated degree completion options for working adults; a variety of pre-professional programs, and master¹s degrees in business administration, counselling psychology, criminal/social justice, education, leadership studies, nursing, public safety administration, and school counselling & guidance.

Graduate programs in education offer specializations in reading & literacy, school administration, secondary certification, special education, curriculum & instruction, teaching & learning, and educational leadership as well as certificates of advanced study in general administrative and superintendent endorsement.
