RFID Access Control Technology

Leading Finnish RFID technology manufacturer, Idesco Oy, is pleased to announce the launch of their latest range of products for the European access control marketplace.

Idesco's focus throughout the product development cycle has been to address two key areas of concern within the access control market - that of product compatibility with existing hardware and the effective application of emerging technology.

The Access 7 C series of readers addresses both of these issues by providing a platform utilising 13.56 MHz  (medium frequency) technology to ensure compatibility with Philips Mifare(r), I-Code(r), Inside Technologies PicoTag(r) and most existing and forthcoming ISO15693 technologies such as Infineon, ST and Tag-It, along with most common interfaces.

Ensuring compatibility with existing systems and future developments, the Idesco Access 7 C range embraces multi-functionality and applications beyond access control.  Transport, banking / credit cards, e-commerce and administrative applications are increasingly adopting 13.56 MHz  technology as a standard format.  Historic price comparisons between magnetic stripe and RFID technologies are becoming less valid as the cost implications of full compatibility and multi-function uses of RFID become more apparent.

Exciting and positive progress is being made in the Access Control market.  Standardisation of protocols may be unpopular with some manufacturers, but the cost saving implications for end users will be significant.  Compatibility and multi-function scalability issues will become problems of the past.

One of the additional advantages of multitechnology readers is independence with regard to both reader and tags. Integrators and end users become free to choose the technology to be applied and by definition the tag supplier.

New technology solves the problems of the PIN code pad

Traditionally PIN code pad readers have used buttons with moving mechanical parts. This results in maintenance being needed from time to time. Readers installed in external environments also need to be covered for protection from the elements. Vandalisation of a PIN code pad normally means that the reader has to be replaced due to the integral nature of the PIN pad within the reader. The use of EMFi foil within the PIN pad overcomes these problems.

EMFi keypads are based on innovative elastic electret sensor. These pads are patented by a finnish company, Screentec, and they are designed especially for heavy use and hostile environments, where high resistance to vandalism is required. EMFi keypads are unique dynamic keypads in the sense that their operation is based on sensing the pressure changes on the active key area when pressed.

Because of the high sensitivity and durability of the electret sensor film it is possible to make keypads in which the active keypad element is installed under a thick protective cover, for example plastics, metal or glass.

Proximity readers with EMFi technology are extremely tolerant to all kinds of weather conditions. No protection is needed for outdoor installation and only the replaceable lens valued at a couple of Euros can be vandalised. All the valuable parts inside the housing are cast in epoxy. Idesco's Access 7 Cpin reader is manufactured with EMFi technology. The reader has been successfully tested by customers and proven to perform even in harsh environments.

"Our technology has a proven track record in a number of identification applications globally, including access control, ticketing solutions, asset marking, factory automation and intrinsically safe areas. Idesco is actively developing a network of partnerships with systems integrators and suppliers across Europe."
