LAPTOPS WORK HARD IN EDUCATION THANKS TO LapSafe® Products
With laptop use in education on the increase, the problems of security and safety are paramount in the minds of department heads and IT managers.
Products from Colchester based laptop security experts, LapSafe® Products (a division of FRAB limited), have helped Philip Morant School and College to overcome these issues.
In 2003 the College embarked on an IT project to provide laptops to all 100 teaching staff. One year later, the Year 12 students (first year of the Sixth Form College) were each provided with their own personal laptop. Initially a pilot study, this rollout was so successful that the College plans to introduce laptops for the next intake of Year 12 this September.
With expensive and mobile IT equipment on site, security and battery re-charging were bound to be issues. Students are responsible for their own laptops but need safe storage when they are not in use. Additionally, the infrastructure of the College does not provide sufficient power outlets for the amount of battery re-charging that would be required.
The College purchased three Ambassador units from lapSafe® Products. Robust construction together with anti-drill, claw locking system and alarm gives the school security and peace of mind. Each unit houses 25 laptops and has a small footprint that minimises space demands in the library where they are situated. The units functionality provides for safe re-charging whilst laptops are in storage, and means that valuable sockets are not in use nor is the schools electrical supply overloaded.
Deputy Head, Leigh Hunter, explains: The units give us the facility to re-charge the laptops quickly, easily and safely, which we would not otherwise be able to do. This means that students can work uninterrupted throughout the day.
LapSafe® Products also supply mobile SmartLine Mentor cabinets for the science and maths blocks at the College. These are equipped with laptops for use in lessons as required, rather than personally allocated to individual students. This benefits students who may not have access to a computer at home, and allows teaching staff to carry out lesson plans effectively rather than have to cope with a low computer to student ratio.
Established in 1996, Philip Morant is the only comprehensive school in Colchester to have its own Sixth Form College. With Technology College status, Philip Morant has become known as a centre of excellence for post-16s education. There are approximately 1,450 students in the School and around 170 in the College.
