The LGS system, the intrusion detection system with laser telemetry
by SERIS

Exclusive in Europe, the LGS system can be used as the sole means of surveillance for a specific zone or to protect large sites.

Thanks to its rotating laser range finders, the LGS system has a range of 150m radius, forming a circle 300m in diameter. The LGS can be linked to traditional systems, such as video for CCTV surveillance (digital recording). In the event of an alarm, the camera can follow every move the intruder makes. This solution makes it possible to detect and identify the threat simultaneously.

Detection system using laser range finder

By combining technology and laser range finder with a sophisticated software algorithm, we have obtained a long range (up to 150 m) outdoor detector that is resistant, flexible and extremely reliable. Either as part of a traditional fixed installation (e.g. an intrusion control station or a CCTV system) or when mobility is required (GSM transmission or via radio), this technology offers practical solutions for the latest challenges in the market.

How does the LGS system work?

The LGS system is comprised of 2 laser range finders, mounted back to back and fitted in the same pressurised, waterproof housing (IP67).

Each laser range finder rotates 360° at a speed of one rotation per second. The laser impulses that are emitted bounce off the surrounding objects and terrain within a 150 m range limit, thereby covering a zone 300 m in diameter.

Each laser beam emitted resembles a cone whose dimensions at 150 m are 1.5 m wide and 10 cm high. To obtain detection volume, the 2 laser range finders are inclined at different angles in relation to their rotation axis.

In this way, for optimal detection on flat terrain and to maintain detection precision at 150 m, the maximum installation height for the LGS is 1m 60.

The LGS system and computer processing

Included in the LGS system is an electronic card, which continuously saves and calculates the measurements taken by the range finder.

With this card, 17 software programmes enable the product to adapt constantly to unpredictable variations in measurements: sudden, violent rain, wind (causing tree movement, for example), sunrise or sunset, snow… This package also makes it possible to identify the origin of a detection by its size, speed or angle of movement.

For users of the LGS system, a simple and user-friendly software programme serves as the interface. Using the computer it is possible to mask certain areas within the detection zone, to track movement and to identify a threat using the video (see the example below).

Registering or updating the LGS system environment is done either on request by the operator (a software icon) or by scheduled programming.

The LGS system will then complete 8 rotations, equivalent to approximately 12 seconds including the computer processing time, to register or update its measurement area.

LGS system integration

The LGS system can be linked to traditional electronic systems dedicated to security. It can be connected to a fixed video system for CCTV monitoring (recording in the event of an alarm) or to more sophisticated detection systems (bus link or dry contact).

Several LGS systems can also be grouped together to ensure complete perimeter surveillance. In this case, the multi LGS software makes it possible to synchronize the entire system and manage the areas covered.

When linked to any type of dome camera, the LGS software runs the camera entirely (pan – tilt - zoom) and makes it possible to follow an intruder moving in the detection zone in real time. This solution makes it possible to detect and identify the threat simultaneously.

The LGS system and its applications

Installing the LGS system is flexible, quick, easy and particularly adapted to those places where traditional technologies are unsuitable.

In fixed areas:

  • Isolated facilities (ex. water tower)

  • Volumetric protection of rooftop (shopping centres, confidential or strategic sites)

  • Vehicle and equipment storage yards

  • Outdoor facilities

  • Industrial sites

  • No man’s land in prisons or sensitive sites

In mobile areas:

  • Temporary storage depots

  • Temporary sites (ex. bungalows or storage)

  • Rapid deployment forces

  • Improvised parking area (trucks with sensitive goods, helicopters, private jets...)

  • Approach by sea way surveillance

  • Airport areas (runways)
