Logistics in Bavaria
by Invest-in-Bavaria

From Bavaria to the whole world

In the age of globalization and internet communication, the flow of goods along with the exchange of information and services have become principal issues of continued development. Optimization and coordination of the movement of goods is key. For this reason logistics is a decisive economic factor for the success of a business enterprise.

Bavaria is Germany’s largest state and offers excellent logistics locations in all parts of the state, because of its central position in Europe. Bavaria also offers many well-developed and favourably located industrial areas, inland ports (with trimodal transport schemes) and airports.

In the heart of Europe
Bavaria boasts an excellent transport infrastructure. With the enlargement of the EU to the East, Bavaria has become an international transport hub and is a major transit area for almost all traffic passing from North-West Europe to Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and continuing on to the south and south-eastern regions of Europe.

Over 136,000 kilometers of roads, incorporated into the German national network of freeways and highways along with seven European North-South and East-West links provide an excellent road traffic infrastructure from, to and within Bavaria. A highly efficient railway network provides optimal conditions for national and international passenger and goods transport. Transport on the Rhine-Main-Danube inland waterway, which is nearly 3,500 km long, connects Bavaria with the big ocean ports on the North Sea and the ports on the Black Sea.

The international airports of Munich and Nuremberg provide connection to the European and intercontinental air network with some 1,200 take-offs and landings daily. In 2003 over 300,000 tons of freight were transloaded at these two airports. All large European business centers can be reached in less than four hours, thanks to the attractive flight-, rail- and roadconnections.

Outstanding locations throughout Bavaria
Throughout the state there are excellent locations to be found for every requirement. You can choose from around 1,700 Bavarian towns and municipalities which are currently offering over 4,000 individual industrial sites in more than 2,600 industrial estates. These sites are available immediately or at short notice. In total there are almost 14,000 hectares of land available. Approximately 80 % of these industrial sites can be purchased immediately or at short notice. Leading logistics locations in Bavaria are found, for example, in the regions of the Lower Main, Upper Franconia, Ingolstadt, Neu-Ulm, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Straubing.

Bavarian Untermain (Lower Main)
The Lower Main region in Bavaria is not only a logistics centre for the Rhine-Main region, but also for the entire country of Germany and of Europe. Frankfurt Airport, which is the largest airport in Europe, is just 30 minutes away. The region is excellently linked to both rail and road networks (Freeways A3 and A45).
The port of Aschaffenburg, with its modern container terminal and inland waterways services to Rotterdam, as well as excellent road and rail links, meets the qualifications of the best freight villages. A network of logistics service providers, such as the headquarters and largest hub of the German Parcel Service and two logistics parks with a whole range of aftersales services, satisfy every demand.

Upper Franconia
The region of Upper Franconia is excellently linked to the German and European trunk road network through the federal expressways A9, A70, A72, A73 and A93. With two container terminals (Hof, Marktredwitz), the ports of Bamberg and Forchheim and the Hof-Plauen civil airport the region boasts infrastructure facilities which act as a pole of attraction to specialized logistics companies. The local airport of Hof-Plauen offers three connections to Frankfurt Airport every working day, linking up to the entire national and international flight network. The expansion of the European Union to the East makes Upper Franconia an international traffic hub, particularly since the region has a remarkably dense network of international logistics service providers. The Logistics Agency of Upper Franconia operates as a neutral contact partner and cooperation platform. It develops futureoriented logistics projects.

Ingolstadt
The freight village of Ingolstadt, established by the city, is a state-of-the-art industrial park consisting of facilities focusing primarily on automotive logistics. Since its commission in 1995, the area has undergone dynamic and innovative development. Currently it covers 83 hectares with approx. 200,000 sqm of factory floor space. The excellent links to the road and rail network, its own reloading station for combined cargo transport and the available service facilities provide excellent logistical conditions which definitely speak in favor of a decision for this location. This booming green city on the Danube is the home to 500,000 inhabitants and is the cultural, shopping and leisure center of the region, right in the heart of Bavaria.

Neu-Ulm
There is practically no other region in southern Germany better suited for the development of a “Service Center for Logistics” than the region of Neu-Ulm/Ulm. Situated in one of the major rail and road (A7/A8) transport hubs—in Ulm/Dornstadt there is shortly to be a new container terminal —as well as its closeness to the airports of Stuttgart and Augsburg and also Memminger Berg, this region is today already a center for the logistics sector. These outstanding location factors are further enhanced through scientific institutions such as the two Universities of Applied Sciences of Neu-Ulm and Ulm where there is a key focus on the topic of “Logistics“. Above and beyond this a “Logistics Day“ is put on in the region of Neu-Ulm/Ulm every year.

The gateway region of Nuremberg is a globally orientated innovation field for logistics and logistics systems. The airport of Nuremberg, with over 60 non-stop flight connections to some 20 national and international business metropolises and the largest tri-modal freight village in the region of southern Germany, offers an excellent infrastructure in the city and in the region. This is where the Who is Who of national and international forwarders and logistics, as well as transport service providers have their locations employing a workforce of over 75,000 persons. The service spectrum covers the entire bandwidth of logistics planning, consultants and transport management. Entrepreneurial expertise is supplemented with scientific potential in the institutions of the Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences, the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Fraunhofer Society. This concentrated form opens up market opportunities and competitive advantages, particularly in the light of an expanding European Union.

The location has direct port and rail terminals, is connected to the A3 and A92 federal freeways as well as to the B8 and B20 expressways. Straubing is just a 60 minutes drive from Munich airport and has its own local airport. There are plots of land available at attractive prices which are ready for immediate development. These range from 1,000 to over 150,000 square meters in size. The region of Straubing-Bogen can also provide a well-motivated and dependable workforce and boasts a high standard of living and is rich with possibilities for leisure activities. The fact that numerous companies have located here—some operating on an international basis—underline the logistics competence of this location.
