Smiths Heimann Biometrics presents world's first at IAI in St. Louis (USA)
by Smiths Heimann Biometrics GmbH

06 September 2004, Jena, Germany. Smiths Heimann Biometrics GmbH (SHB), a security technology company with headquarters in Jena, Germany, presented two world's first at this year's IAI International Educational Conference in St. Louis (MO) USA.

L SCAN 1000P is the world's first FBI-certified livescanner with an image resolution of 1000 pixels-per-inch (ppi). Although users had expressed the need for this resolution for quite some time, all commercially available scanners were certified only for the widely accepted standard resolution of 500 ppi. This new compact and thereby portable tenprint and palm print scanner had passed the challenging 1000 ppi FBI-certification in all capture formats as the first livescanner ever just a few weeks prior to the event. The device was very well received within the community of the leading latent print examiners attending this year's IAI. With its excellent image quality, the L SCAN 1000P provides all the features the experts have been calling for for a long time. This specifically refers to the so-called 3rd level details (e.g. ridge width and pore distribution in the papillary lines).

L SCAN 1000P is a top of the line product being ideally suited for criminal applications. The device is capable of capturing all kinds of flat and rolled fingerprints and thumbprints as well as all upper/lower and side palm prints in an extremely easy and intuitive way. Scanning time for palms is just 2 seconds. For all scans the device provides instant real-time preview on the computer screen.

Another world's-first presented by SHB at this year's IAI is the LS2 CHECK livescanner that can take the flat prints of all fingers of both hands simultaneously as well as both thumbs in three easy steps. Initially developed for the US National Fingerprint-based Applicant Study (N-FACS) to determine the feasibility of establishing a rapid and positive fingerprint-based identification background check system for authorized non-criminal justice purposes, it achieved superior results due to its unique concept of large format capture and uncompromised image quality as explained in the official report of the FBI's CJIS Division. This device was recently certified to comply with the FBI's IQS (Image Qualification Specifications) standard. The LS2 CHECK is the first and only device that has been certified in the new category "Identification Flats Systems" so far.
It is especially suitable for Quick ID-Check applications, such as visa issuance and background checks of job applicants where an individual's identity is checked against an existing database. The device is currently involved in several pilot projects of the US Government. It has been available as a full commercial product since the beginning of 2004, confirming SHB's position as the innovative provider of new fingerprint products right at the time the end users need them.
