BNFL survey meters support UK governments emergency mass decontamination procedures
by BIL Solutions

BNFL Instruments has supplied the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) with 450 survey meters to help ensure the personal safety of emergency services personnel and members of the public when responding to incidents that may include a threat of radiation exposure.

The OGC, working in conjunction with Her Majesty’s Fire Service Inspectorate and under the co-ordination of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, has purchased the survey meters in accordance with its emergency mass decontamination procedures that form part of the response to terrorist activity.

The RDS-200 Universal Survey Meters are small, lightweight, portable and battery powered with the capability to constantly monitor and record the dose rate and accumulated dose levels for gamma beta radiation using external probes. The user can set the permitted dose level and an audible alarm is triggered immediately this level is exceeded warning of the need to avoid further exposure. The dose rate is constantly and clearly indicated on the real time digital display.

The robust, high impact resistant aluminium construction conforms to an IP67 water-resistant specification – ideal for use in emergency decontamination situations. Each meter is supplied with its own carrying straps and transport case to help protect it during storage, transport and deployment.
The survey meters were selected by OGC following an extensive and rigorous evaluation and testing programme to ensure their reliability, performance and fitness for use in accordance with emergency service procedures. The proven experience and know-how of BIL Instruments in radiation monitoring was another key factor in the selection process.
