L- 3 Communications/ Electrodynamics (L-3/EDI) Targa Systems Division
by Joe Fronsee
L- 3 Communications/ Electrodynamics (L-3/EDI) Targa Systems Division manufactures a wide range of Data Transfer Systems and other solid-state data storage systems for military and aerospace applications.
L-3/EDIs Targa Systems Divisions primary expertise is in the design, development, and production of Data Transfer Systems. These systems have been used on a wide range of fixed and rotary wing platforms including B2, F-15, F-16, CF-18, C-5, NH-90 and a variety of Eurocopter and Sikorsky helicopter platforms.
The following are some examples of what Targa Systems can provide.
PC Card Data Transfer Systems:
Targas PC Card Series 3 Data Transfer Units (DTU) provide a compact self-contained system to store and retrieve data from industry standard PCMCIA/ATA cards and have been qualified to meet the most demanding MIL-STD-810 and RTCA DO-160 environments. Its small, lightweight, rugged construction provides for reliable data storage, including a locking access door with door open detect & PC Card shutdown. It accommodates all PC Cards (ATA) capacities, currently available up to 2GB and soon to be available up to 8GB. The Series 3 DTU is available with a wide variety of interfaces, including SCSI-2; 8 bit single ended, Serial RS422/485 and RS232 MIL-STD-1553, USB and Ethernet.

Series 3 PC Card Data Transfer System
Removable Disk Data Transfer System
The Series 4 DTU is a rugged, field-deployed unit providing SCSI interconnections to the target system as well as electrical and mechanical infrastructures for the removable Data Transfer Device.
The DTU, conforming to an ARINC CDU style, K=4 (DZUS mount) form factor is equipped with an RTCA-DO-160C, Cat Z compliant 28VDC power supply and a rear panel mount, MIL-C-38999 connector supporting a SCSI-2, 8bit, single ended, synchronous/asynchronous interface.
The DTU front panel accommodates four DZUS ¼ turn fasteners and the DTD access door. The door is opened by simply rotating the ¼ turn door latch counter-clockwise. This action releases the door lock mechanism and as the door is opened, an optical sensor is tripped and the DTU executes an orderly power shutdown of the SCSI interface to the DTD. This is an important feature to meet explosive atmosphere requirements and to avoid data corruption due to operator actions during data write operations. Once the door is open, the DTD is inserted through the front panel slot and gently pushed into place. The door is locked by simply rotating the latch clockwise.

Series 4 DTU with Removable DTD
The Series 4 DTD is a rugged, removable media containing a 2.5" Flash SCSI drive with capacities up to 9.2 GB. (Soon to be 18GB.) The DTD is available in three variants to provide Normal SCSI, Fast SCSI and Ultra SCSI interface performance.
Targa Program Experience
Targa has had extensive experience on numerous helicopter and fixed wing platforms and we have the expertise to understand your requirements and apply our products to them. Some of the specific platforms are listed below:
Goodrich Corporation (BFG), NAVY COSSI Program and Sikorsky Helicopters
BFG was contracted to retrofit several Navy CH-53 and SH-60 helicopters with HUMS as part of the Commercial Operations and Support Savings Initiative (COSSI). BFG selected Targas Series 3 DTU for their HUMS Systems. Targa worked closely with BFG in meeting all qualification testing requirements and provided some product modifications to fully meet BFGs specifications.
Eurocopter Helicopter HUMS
The Series 3 DTU was originally developed under partial funding contract with Eurocopter, France, to comply with their specification for a HUMS (Health and Usage Management) DTU for helicopters. The Targa Series 3 DTU has passed the Safety of Flight Qualification Testing required by Eurocopter.
Racal Defence Sea King Mark 2 Electronics Upgrade
Racal Defence Electronics Limited, UK, selected Targa Electronics' Series 3 DTU as part of the SeaKing AEW Radar System/Mission System Upgrade. The Targa Series 3 DTU was modified to meet the specific needs of Racal Defence Electronics in this program. Using Targa's Series 3 SCSI DTU as the design baseline, Targa developed the custom packaged unit and completed the full airworthiness certification program within 6 months.
B2 Stealth Bomber:
In addition to its numerous other platforms/programs, Targas DTS is the primary mission load device on the B2 Stealth Bomber. The Series 3 DTU passed all flight qualifications testing and is now installed and flying on the B2.
