Fingerprint Cards and Comex Electronics AB extend licence agreement to new markets and products
Fingerprint Cards’ customer Comex Electronics AB, Stockholm, has widened its original licence to include new markets and products. While the companies’ original agreement concerned only Comex products with high-level security certification for delivery to the Swedish Department of Defence (FMV) the newly signed, non-exclusive licence agreement now includes defence authorities in other countries. The agreement also includes a non-military version of the integrated biometric system tested and certified for the Swedish authorities.
Comex Electronics has already developed and delivered a ‘match-on-card’ system using Fingerprint Cards’ technology for access to computers and networks based on smart cards and fingerprint verification, one where the cardholder’s fingerprint is verified securely inside the smart card. The Comex system unites two key security technologies: Fingerprint Cards’ embedded fingerprint verification system, and the leading Java Card smart card platform, delivered in this case by Oberthur Card Systems, a world-leading supplier of integrated chip cards.
Fingerprint Cards´ matching software is implemented within each card chip so that the matching of an individual’s finger pattern and the final decision on their identity is made inside their card. The smart card stores securely any data about the cardholder’s finger pattern, as well as important credentials and a digital signature. Fingerprint Cards will also supply the biometric hardware: the fingerprint sensor and processor integrated to Comex’s smart card reader products.
The new, extended agreement allows Comex Electronics to sell their product through regional systems integrators worldwide. To enable sales to NATO countries the scope of the agreement includes Cominvest Systems (UK) Ltd, a close co-operations partner of Comex Electronics AB.

Fingerprint Cards has developed electronic systems that determine personal identity by analysing the unique fingertip patterns of individuals. The systems comprise microchips with algorithms that scan, store and compare fingertip patterns without the help of any PC processor. Two types of capacitive sensors have been developed, an extremely small swipe sensor and a flatbed sensor. Processor ASICs and algorithms have been developed for each type of sensor. Thanks to the small size of these devices, the low power consumption of the system and the possibility of very low production costs, this technology can be implemented in very small volume products such as smart cards and mobile (cell) phones, where the requirements for such features are extremely high.
